He was a German composer, organist and teacher. After graduation Brandmüller worked as a church organist in a Mainz. He worked as a professor of composition and music theory at the University of Saarland, too. He later became head of the Institute for New Music. During his career he won several awards like Composition Prize of the City of Stuttgart, Rome Prize of the Villa Massimo and Kunstpreis des Saarlandes. He passed away as a result of a serious illness.
